Hard Feelings / Loveless: Publication, Typography

The Challenge

Formmaking class was all about experimentation. The final project was incredibly open but was all about experimentation. I decided I wanted to make a brief zine to go along with the lyrics to one of my favorite songs, Hard Feelings / LOVELESS by Lorde.

Groovy Grainy Gradients

I had been seeing deep grainy gradients all over my Pinterest feed and felt that I needed to experiment with this style myself. Using the Melodrama album cover colors, which I also collaged together on the front cover, I created a gradient for each spread. I organized the pages to go from light to dark and then back to light right before the end of the zine. The colors visualize the mood of the lyrics as the happiness fades into sadness and then heals into bright colors again.

Expanding Typography

I used the typography from the previous spread as a graphic element in each spread. I blew the type up so it is almost unrecognizable as a letter, but the curves and shapes of the type make interesting-looking forms. These forms added a really special design element to this project and made it feel complete.
